'Weghorst is only a sticking plaster for the next six months': Man United's ideal signing this month named

Manchester United have signed Wout Weghorst on a six-month loan to bolster their attacking options ahead of the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Meanwhile, writing for The Athletic, Carl Anka has urged the Red Devils to think about the future and bring in Marcus Thuram before the transfer deadline.

Anka said: "Erik ten Hag has made it very clear that his side is in need of a striker, but Man United's precarious financial situation means there is a gap between the sort of players he wants and what can be acquired this window.

"Ten Hag wants an attacker who can hold the ball up and bring others into play, but also has the pace to run behind defences and help with pressing.  If he had a time machine, he would look to get a 25-year-old Edison Cavani.

"If he had £80 million to spend, then Victor Oshimen or Tammy Abraham might be on his radar. But Man United are thought to only be in the market for loans or short deals. Wout Weghorst's services have already been secured.

"But that's a sticking plaster for the next six months. Someone who could be acquired for relatively affordable prices and could play for the next six years is 25-year-old Thuram, who is also in the final six months of his contract at Borussia Monchengladbach and has scored 10 goals in 15 league appearances this season."

Thuram will be available on a free transfer in the summer so Gladbach could agree to sell the France international before the January transfer deadline in order to make some money from the player's exit.
