'A lot of business will happen later in the summer': James Pearce breaks down Liverpool's sell-to-buy policy

Liverpool have been linked with what seems like every footballer on the planet. However, so far, the Reds have signed only Ibrahima Konate.

With 6 weeks to go before the transfer window closes, The Athletic's James Pearce has provided an update on when the serious business will start.

A senior club source is quoted telling The Athletic: "There was always an acceptance that with the Euros and the ongoing financial impact of COVID on clubs, that a lot of business would happen later in the summer.

"Jurgen has got 34 players in the camp in Austria, plus the boys on holiday following the Euros and the Copa America. There’s a lot to be decided. There’s the financial element but also, you can’t just stockpile players.

"You can only have 17 non-homegrown players (over the age of 21) in your 25-man Premier League squad, so space has to be created."

Pearce adds that Liverpool want to offload a few players - namely Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Neco Williams and Loris Karius.

The former 3 players will hopefully raise over £40M for the club. However, no offer has come in for Karius and the futures of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are still up in the air.

Pearce adds: "Behind the scenes, Edwards and assistant sporting director Julian Ward — together with head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter — have been working tirelessly, speaking to clubs and agents across Europe to establish what is and isn’t feasible.

"Shortlists have been drawn up but making definitive decisions is currently tricky. Further signings are unlikely until the picture regarding outgoings becomes much clearer."

Well, it would seem that fans will just have to wait for a few players to be sold before we start adding to the squad.
