Todd Boehly explains Chelsea long-contract policy: 'If you look at franchises that dominate for long time'

After Todd Boehly & Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea, the club began handing out unusually long contracts. For example, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk are tied to the club until 2032.

The reason for this policy is reportedly the desire to spread out the fees the club paid for these players over more years, thus avoiding potential FFP sanctions.

Giving out long contracts has also been described as a risk, especially if a player does not reach his potential but stays at the club for many years.

Todd Boehly explained Chelsea's policy, as quoted by Ben Jacobs: "Winning is clearly the most important thing. We are focused on winning.

"If you look at franchises that dominate for a long time they have real stability in the team, front office and coaching staff. So to be able to lay the groundwork and start with stability in the team, and having a young squad with longer than average contracts [is a good start]...

"A 7-year contract is really a 5-year contract because you are never going to let a contract expire to the last year. You’re either going to extend [it] or see what’s best for the player and the club.”
