Chelsea defeated Southampton 3-1 with a much-changed line-up from one that started the game against Juventus.
Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the team, including bringing on three academy graduates who came on from the bench in Turin:
Mendy; Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Chilwell; Werner, Hudson-Odoi, Lukaku.
Callum Hudson-Odoi was finally given a chance to play an attacking role, as opposed to performing at wing-back. Along with Timo Werner, they replaced Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz who have been struggling recently.
Trevoh Chalobah replaced Andreas Christensen, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek partnered Mateo Kovacic in midfield instead of Jorginho.
Finally, Ben Chilwell, at last, returned to the line-up in the Premier League after a lengthy spell on the fringes of the squad.
The changes worked as Chelsea dominated the game in the first ha;f and scored three goals - although two of them were disallowed.
The Blues also created quite a lot of danger from set-pieces. One corner routine led to the goal that stood and ensured Chelsea were in the lead before the break.
In the second half, Tuchel's side was in control as well - until Chilwell fouled Tino Livramento in the box. The penalty went against the run of play, but changes were needed as it went a bit stale up front.
Mason Mount, Jorginho and Ross Barkley appeared instead of Hudson-Odoi, Kovacic and Loftus-Cheek. Just a minute after coming on, Barkley played a key role in Werner's match-winning goal.
The changes meant yeat another 3-5-2 experiment, as Mount performed a role of an attacking midfielder rather than a third forward. Here's how the Blues ended the game:
