'I can’t see it, you must have better eyes than I have': Alan Shearer argues with former referee and Ian Wright about VAR's decision

In Sunday's game between Newcastle and Arsenal, VAR's intervention early on sparked a heated reaction from Alan Shearer towards former referee Dermot Gallagher.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded a penalty just seven minutes into the match, believing that Bruno Guimaraes' shot had struck the arm of Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior.

However, upon closer inspection using the pitch-side monitor, it became evident that the ball had actually hit Kiwior's thigh. Kavanagh subsequently reversed his original decision.

Shearer asked Gallagher: 'You think Dermot or you know?'

'Well I’m convinced it’s hit the top of his thigh,' the former referee, clearly uncomfortable, responded.

"Are you 100 per cent certain that’s hit the top of his leg and it’s an absolute howler from the referee?' Shearer continued."

"Can you answer the question? Are you absolutely 100 per cent certain that's hit his leg on the replays that you’ve seen? Because I can’t see it, you must have better eyes than I have, and why’s it taken seven replays if it’s that certain?"

Ian Wright, on the other hand, working alongside Shearer and Gallagher said: "The problem with that is they've taken too long, they don't need to look at it that long to see it's the top of his thigh"

Expressing his thoughts further on social media, Shearer tweeted: "The handball law is a complete f... mess."
